The "Sherman Tank" of Encoders Saves the Day

The Company
A leading manufacturer of systems for the lumber industry that combine high technology with an experienced operator to produce up to 15% more lumber from each log, and to better control product quality.

The Problem
Due to the demanding environment in which the equipment is installed, this company was having trouble finding the right combination of price, performance, and capability. They had tried several vendors without success and were facing a delivery deadline for their newest system. To cite just one example of the type of problems they were facing, the installation positioning of one of the required encoders caused it to be used as a step to reach certain parts of the saw during routine maintenance. As a result, in addition to the normal environment of a sawmill - heat, dust, humidity, etc. - they needed an encoder that could serve as a ladder!

The Solution
After a series of discussions with the company to carefully define all of their requirements, EPC recommended the Model 716 enhanced cube in an HD-10 housing. Because of its rugged construction, the HD-10 is known by nearly all of its users as the "Sherman Tank", and proved to be ideally suited for this demanding application. EPC modified the housing to allow the connector to exit on the side rather than the top to prevent the maintenance personnel from accidentally damaging the cable when they used the encoder as a ladder. This modification also preserved the optimal mounting methodology and position, helping remove any doubt about the encoder's suitability to survive and not be a source of failure. In addition, the HD-10's isolated bearing design helped ensure its ability to withstand the vibration introduced by the sawing operation.

The 716 passed all of the customer's tests with flying colors, and has become their standard encoder for this system. In addition, because of EPC's prompt follow-up, and because of their willingness to work with this company to arrive at a solution that exactly fit their requirements, EPC is their first choice for all of their encoder needs.

EPC Product(s) Used

Ultra Heavy Duty
The HD 10 Ultra Heavy Duty encoder is designed for applications with severe shaft loading conditions. An internally mounted Cube housing is used the same as the Heavy Duty housing.
